Five men died on 12 July in Kelowna when a construction crane collapsed at the Brooklyn at Bernard Block, a 26-story residential building under construction.

One of the fatalities included a person who died when the collapsing crane crashed into the office building adjacent to the worksite. Another individual was on the crane when it collapsed, and the other casualties were on the ground at the time of the accident.

The 26 story-high crane was being dismantled at the time of the accident and its top portion, estimated at nine to 12 meters (30 to 40 feet) tall, fell to the ground around 11 a.m. local time, according to reports.

An investigation is underway into what caused the crane’s collapse.
