Construction at Los Angeles’ Cumulus Development Nears Peak

Three cranes are in full swing on the corner of Jefferson and La Cienega Boulevards, as construction goes vertical at the 11-acre (4.5-hectare) Cumulus site.

Carmel Partners is developing the large mixed-use complex, which is set to contain a seven-story podium building, a 30-story tower, and a one-acre (0.40-hectare) public park. The two buildings will feature a combined 1,210 apartment units and 100,000 square feet (9,290 square meters) of commercial space—half of which has already been leased by Whole Foods.

A majority of the project’s residential units will be housed in the mid-rise structure, which is being designed by TCA Architects. The building includes 910 apartments, residential amenities, and ground-floor retail and restaurant space.

The 320-foot-tall (97-meter-tall) tower on the northeast corner of the site will include the remaining 300 apartments, and is being designed by Solomon Cordwell Buenz. The park is being designed by Studio MLA.

Cumulus will open in phases beginning in late 2020, with a completion date in 2022. The Whole Foods on-site is scheduled to open in 2021.

Several other projects are under construction along the Expo Line, including the (W)rapper office tower, also at the La Cienega/Jefferson Station, and Carmel’s 595-unit Linea project at the Expo/Sepulveda Station.
