A major renewal of the London brutalist icon, Barbican Centre, is on the horizon. The City of London Corporation has launched a search for a design team to re-envision the landmark as it approaches its 40th year.

The request for proposals stipulates the submitted projects must respect the performing arts center’s Grade-II listing status, according to an article in PBC Today. The initial brief focuses on embedding digital technology to facilitate connecting the building with a global audience, and allows flexibility to renew venues and transform underused areas into flex spaces.

The Barbican Renewal project will also address the building’s environmental performance through major improvements. The facility is targeting net-zero carbon emissions by 2027.

While the project budget has not yet been finalized, design teams are being asked to target construction budgets between US$69 million to US$206 million (£50 million to £150 million). Final selection of the design team is anticpated by February 2022.
