bKL Architecture, a firm headquartered at the Aqua tower in Chicago's Lakeshore East neighborhood, is doing its part to be of service during the COVID-19 pandemic by creating face shields that can be used primarily by healthcare workers on the frontlines of the crisis.

The first batch was delivered to doctors at the University of Chicago on 28 March 2020 and their original stock of 3D printers could produce 50 face shields per day. They aimed to double their production to 100 shields per day with four more 3D printers. The firm also worked on gathering more materials, which only cost US$0.75 per face shield, with new printers costing about US$4,000.

All printers purchased using contribution funds will be donated to Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Public Library system once the COVID-19 crisis has passed and/or personal protective equipment (PPE) is more accessible.

As of 30 March 2020, due to contributions from the local community, they’ve been able to purchase an additional six 3D printers for face shield creation. As such, the firm increased its fundraising goal to US$35,000 to accommodate the need for more supplies and the two additional 3D printers. The next update will be given by the company on 6 April 2020.
