Approval Given to Increase Height from 35 to 55 Floors in Jersey City Development
On 6 May 6, the Planning Board for Jersey City reviewed and approved a proposal for Imperial Tower in the Journal Square that nearly doubles the height of the original design under a revised plan responding to updated affordable housing incentives.
Originally approved at 35 stories, the project at 2966 Kennedy Boulevard is now proposed to rise 55 stories and include 542 residential units, 63 of which would be affordable. Construction began in late 2023 but was halted in 2024. The updated plan by MVMK Architecture retains the hotel, retail, banquet hall, and rooftop restaurant components, while shifting to a glass curtain wall design on the new upper floors. The breakdown includes four parking levels, two hotel floors, and 20 residential floors. Residential amenities span the 32nd, 51st, and rooftop levels, with a pool deck and jacuzzi. Hotel rooms occupy floors 9–13; a banquet hall will top the 55th floor, and dual rooftop restaurants remain.
The Planning Board voted 5-2 to approve the development, with an acknowledgment of the need to address both community needs and regulatory requirements, along with conditions that include collaborating with traffic staff and submitting updated traffic assessments.
