A fire that broke up in a hotel on Manhattan's Upper East Side on 15 March, 2023, is under investigation by the FBI to determine if it was linked to the arrest of an exiled Chinese businessman, who was arrested for fraud and other financial infractions. The funds fueled the purchase of a private yacht and mansion. 

The fire broke out at the Sherry-Netherland Hotel, where the businessman also lived in an apartment. A search had taken place earlier that day in the residence at 60th and Fifth Avenue.
