20-Story "Utopian" Residential Building in Taichung Revealed
New York-based firm ODA has designed Green Utopia, a 20-story, 94-unit residential building in northern Taichung. Positioned on a prime corner site near a public park and the city’s baseball stadium, the project blends architecture, interiors, and landscaping to create a seamless connection between urban living and nature.
Inspired by traditional Taiwanese residential courtyards, Green Utopia integrates communal outdoor spaces throughout its vertical structure. These floating gardens, landscaped with lush greenery, serve as semi-private gathering spaces with expansive views of the surrounding park and cityscape. Each residence includes a private balcony garden facing the park, adding depth and texture to the building's terracotta-accented facade.
At the base, a structural element resembling tree branches supports the building, contrasting with neighboring modern glass towers. Warm materials, including terracotta-like tiles and dark gray accents, complement the natural surroundings. ODA’s interior design reflects Feng Shui principles, using elements such as limestone walls, metal accents, wood paneling, and reflective surfaces to create a harmonious and grounded atmosphere.
The building's design layers three distinct zones inspired by a temple structure. The ground level features communal amenities including a bar, lounge, library, fitness center, and spa, all with earthy textures and framed views of the adjacent park. The middle levels house the residential units, emphasizing harmony with nature, while the top level is a shared rooftop space.
