"15-Minute City" Master Plan is Approved in Queens
A walkable master plan, designed as a "15-minute city", for a community in Queens dubbed Innovation QNS will offer an efficient way for residents to access retail, housing, and public space in the Astoria neighborhood. The master plan was recently approved by the New York City council.
The scheme will center around a 40,000-square-foot (3,716 square meters) public park and will stretch five city blocks between 35th and 36th avenue. Mid-rise apartment blocks are proposed for the master plan and will supplant the current parking lots and industrial buildings. A substantial 92,000 square feet (8,547 square meters) of the development will be dedicated to public space and the units will be offered at both market rates and at affordable housing rates with senior citizens in mind.
Developers Silverstein Properties, Kaufman Astoria Studios, and Bedrock Real Estate Partners created the plan with architecture firm ODA. Construction on the project is planned to begin in 2023, with the first buildings being completed in 2025.
