Walking Tour
Join Dominic Bettison, Director at Wilkinson Eyre Architects for London's Height and Heritage Walking Tour. The tour will look at how heritage issues have helped shape London’s unique skyline and high-rise architecture. From the absolute requirement to preserve key views of St Pauls Cathedral and the Palace of Westminster, to the many conservation areas with their historic buildings and medieval street patterns which generate uniquely shaped building plots and the design of the buildings themselves.
The tour begins at the Barbican centre in London. Bomb damage led to compressive redevelopment of this historic part of London in the 1970s including hi-rise towers designed in the Brutalist style of architecture. The tour ends for a drink at Leadenhall Market dating back to 1321 and itself surrounded by some of the newest and most controversial tall buildings in the City of London.
