During the CTBUH 2018 Middle East Conference, awards were conferred in relation to the following CTBUH Research and Academic programs, all of which give students and researchers the opportunity to showcase their work on a global platform. 

International Student Design Competition

The winner and final rankings for the 2018 competition were determined, with first prize awarded to a project by Yiming Gui, Ziyue Li, and Ziqiao Ma of the Shenyang Jianzhu University entitled: “Ethnic-Minority Sky Village.” $21,000 is prizes were awarded to the five finalists.

International Research Seed Funding

The 2018 Seed Research Seed Funding of $20,000 was awarded to Dr. Ye Yu, an Assistant Professor at Tongji University. The research will measure the behavioral impacts of various patterns of public space around tall buildings, with a focus on identifying health-oriented design strategies.

Traveling Tall Building Academic Studio

This year’s academic studio will be undertaken by 16 architecture students from the Illinois Institute of Technology, with assistance and $20,000 in funding from the sponsor, allowing students to travel to China, where they will apply their learning to a specific and real site.

Student Research Competition

The 2018 competition allocated $20,000 in research funds to the winning project entitled “Curtain Wall Façade for Water Collection on Tall Buildings” submitted by Joseph Pinto, an undergraduate student at Illinois Institute of Technology, working under Patrick Loughran, Principal, Goettsch Partners.

Master’s Thesis Award

This new program called upon Master’s-level architecture students to collaborate on a thesis topic exploring the concept of rope-less elevators. The top prize of $4,000 was awarded to Winki Ip, University of Melbourne, for her outstanding design scheme.
