CTBUH 2024 International Research Seed Funding

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat is pleased to announce the awarding of the 2024 International Research Seed Funding grant to Dr. Nirmal Kishnani (Principal Investigator), Associate Professor, Mun Summ Wong, Professor in Practice, and Alakesh Dutta, Research Associate, all at Department of Architecture, National University of Singapore, for the project “Carbon-Neutral Tall Buildings: Projecting the Impact of Better Performing Structural Systems and Renewable Energy Technologies on High-Rise Typologies.”

The research team has won a grant of $20,000, kindly sponsored by Sun Hung Kai Properties, to demonstrate that future tall buildings can attain onsite carbon neutrality, whilst existing buildings can be retrofitted today to become low-carbon. The proposal seeks to validate and extrapolate this finding through an in-depth analysis of two tall buildings in Singapore, each representing a common typology and Green features. As part of the research methodology, the team looks into the carbon benchmarking; the impact of envelope-based systems on LCE of next generation of BIPV and vertical greenery; and the impact of choice of structural material. The findings will support design thinking, balancing form and density in service of carbon and offer important insights into future norms and codes that affect carbon in the built environment.

The CTBUH 2024 International Research Seed Funding Initiative is a key aspect of the advancement of the CTBUH’s Research Division. The initiative was created to assist researchers in developing projects and ideas to a level that can secure more significant funding, in the form of collaborations and joint proposals in conjunction with the CTBUH.
