SHENZHEN – During the 2019 Tall + Urban Innovation Conference, dignitaries gathered at the Signboard Inauguration Ceremony for the Ping An Finance Center, confirming it as the world’s tallest all-office building, and the tallest building in Southern China.
The event took place at the Ping An Finance Center, and was hosted by CTBUH China Office Director Dr. Peng Du. Huichuan Ren, General Manager of Ping An China Group, spoke first, extending thanks to all the delegates who took the time to be present. Ren then talked about the process of constructing and designing such a formidable project, and how it was engineered to achieve such a robust connectivity with the pedestrian and transit networks surrounding it. Then, CTBUH Chairman Steve Watts, Partner, alinea Consulting, thanked delegates for attending this auspicious moment for tall buildings in Shenzhen.
“The Council is very pleased to join our colleagues at Ping An Finance Center in the recognition of this important building as the Tallest All-Office Building in the World and the Tallest Building in Southern China,” Watts said. “This building stands as an iconic anchor for Shenzhen, a cornerstone of a vibrant urban district, and a testament to the technical achievements now possible for tall buildings. The CTBUH offers its congratulations to all parties involved in the realization of this project.”
At the afternoon’s conclusion, Du remarked on how much Shenzhen had expanded over the past few decades, with Ping An Finance Center exemplifying this explosive growth, noting that he was looking forward to seeing its continued evolution as a dynamic global city. The group posed for a photo outside the building in front of the newly unveiled signboard.
Located in Shenzhen’s new central business district, the 599.1-meter-tall Ping An Finance Center is the city’s tallest building, and an iconic presence on its skyline. The facade’s tapered design not only lends it a prismatic aesthetic but improves structural and wind performance as well, cutting baseline wind loads by as much as 40 percent. Steel piers, converging in a V-shaped pattern, create protection around the tower, shielding it from powerful storms and lightning strikes.
