Japan’s First Wood-Frame Residential High-Rise to Be Built in Tokyo

Nomura Real Estate Development is in the process of building a wood-frame hybrid condominium in Tokyo’s Chiyoda-ku, Ochanomizu district.

Proud Kanda Surugadai is a 14-story, 36-unit condominium due for completion in March 2021. This would be the first wood-frame hybrid condominium over 10 stories to be built in all of Japan.

Structural elements, such as pillars, are made from wood materials sourced domestically.

Structural elements, such as pillars, are made from wood materials sourced domestically. Floors two to 11 will incorporate laminated veneer lumber (LVL) and reinforced concrete walls, while floors 12 to 14 will use cross-laminated timber (CLT). Planning and construction is being carried out by Takenaka Corporation.

The apartments range in size from 49 to 80 square meters. The land is fixed-term leasehold, expiring in 2083. Sales are scheduled to begin in May 2020.
