The Mexican architecture firm Sordo Madaleno began the construction of the SOHL mixed-use tower in Monterrey, Nuevo León, on May 17.

The investment cost for the project will be 3.5 billion pesos (US$ 184 million). The firm expects to complete the building in 2022.

Featured Buildings

The complex will consist 159,859 square meters of space and will be divided into 25,000 square meters of residential area distributed in 24 levels; 28,000 square meters of office space on 27 floors, and a commercial area of 25,000 square meters that includes a linear park and a boutique hotel.

The tower rises from a traditional system of columns, with 28 columns for offices and 14 for residential, in addition to a rigid core of concrete and three structural stabilizers in the interior of the building. The design was created to accommodate the lateral forces of the wind.

“The central core in conjunction with couplings allows flexibility in the configuration of the program, as well as its adaptable layout”, says Sordo Madaleno Arquitectos.

On the tower’s upper portions, gaps will allow light and air to enter through the façade, which will help the ventilation of the tower and avoid the use of curved glass. This will also cause the reflections of the tower to be faceted.

To achieve a more effective circulation system inside the tower, Sordo Madaleno Architects included several two-story elevators to improve the speed of vertical traffic.

The SOHL Tower is located next to the Plaza de los Compositores, in downtown Monterrey, and is planned in two phases: the first involves the relocation of the Capillas del Carmen to a nearby land to unify the project. It also includes the construction of the tower and the addition of a commercial area.

Phase two of the project corresponds to the construction of a hotel zone in the properties adjacent to the first phase.

The mixed-use building is part of an urban master plan to densify the Mirador neighborhood in Monterrey, so the commercial development located between SOHL Tower and Constitucion Avenue will serve as an extension of the city.
