Plans for a 20-floor hotel complete with a sky bar overlooking the River Clyde in Glasgow are a step closer with the submission of demolition plans for the site.

The £20 million (USD$23 million) development on the corner of Dixon Street and Clyde Street was given the green light by Glasgow City Council in 2017.

Branded Citihome, the Stallan-Brand-designed tower will incorporate a ground-floor restaurant and retail space, as well as the city’s first publicly accessible rooftop bar.

Demolition arrangements for the existing building are now being considered by the council after being submitted last week by Young and Gault Architects on behalf of developers Clyde Dixon.

Writing in 2016, developers said: “Clyde Dixon Land and Property Ltd. proposes to submit a detailed planning application for erection of a mixed-use development; comprising hotel accommodation above, with retail opportunity below.”

The developers added: “Not only does the building respond to the wider cityscape in terms of scale, but it is contextually responsive to its immediate surroundings following city datum lines. The building will deliver approximately 500 square meters of retail space onto Clyde Street and Dixon Street, animating the waterfront and continuing the retail strip of Buchanan Street.”

“In the context of an evolving urbanism that embraces high-density buildings along the riverfront, the proposal will meet all the requirements for City’s Tall Buildings Policy, providing an iconic installation to the Glasgow skyline.”
