Five Finalists Selected in the Student Tall Building Design Competition

6th Annual CTBUH International Student Design Competition
October 2017
Kindly Sponsored by:

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat is pleased to announce that five finalists have been selected in the 6th annual International Student Design Competition kindly sponsored by Woods Bagot. The competition’s theme aligns with the 2017 CTBUH Conference in Sydney, Australia – Connecting the City: People, Density, & Infrastructure – taking place October 30–November 3, 2017.

The theme of this competition focused on the future of humanity and collective benefits of urban density. Students were asked to consider how tall buildings can be vehicles for creating increased density not just through sheer height, but by connecting multiple layers of the city. Physical urban infrastructure, circulation, greenery, and urban functions traditionally restricted to the ground level would all, ideally, continue up and into the building, such that the buildings themselves become an extension of the city: a part of the two-dimensional horizontal urban plane flipped vertical.

The competition consists of two juries. The first-round jury narrowed down the 229 submissions to 25 semifinalists in mid-August. The second-round jury – chaired by Domenic Alvaro, Director, Woods Bagot, and comprising five prominent professionals representing a variety of disciplines and geographies – named the five finalists in late August.
