Fang Li and James Antell, Rolf Jensen & Associates, discussed the 71 stories Pearl River Tower, Guangzhou at the CTBUH 8th World Congress in Dubai. The building features numerous design strategies to reduce energy demand from the local grid, which include vertical axis wind turbine and photovoltaic panel energy generation, double curtain wall and radiant metal ceiling cooling system. The combination of these features is unique in a high rise and required an integrated fire protection strategy. A performance-based approach using computer based fire models with internationally accepted practices was a key element in providing the solutions using the latest advancements in technology.
