Steven Baldridge, of Baldridge and Associates, presented an examination of high-rise projects in an island context from the most remote large city in the world Honolulu, Hawaii at the CTBUH 8th World Congress in Dubai. From a social standpoint there is some local opposition to building taller. For projects that are approved, the challenges of construction include availability of both labor and materials along with the logistics of shipping. Unexpected consequences of floor area and height restrictions have resulted in building designs that are optimized both from a functional use and structural systems approach resulting in reduced material requirements and thus sustainability.Download the paper here, and find more video presentations here.
