Primary Output

Development of a Façade Fire Incident Database for a Machine Learning Assessment

Download this Output as a PDF

This research compiles a database of high-rise building façade fires – which includes the general characteristics of the buildings, information on the fire incidents, and the types of materials used to create the façades – and provides an assessment following the application of a machine learning procedure to this data.

The 2017 Research Seed Funding, sponsored by Sun Hung Kai Properties was awarded to Michael Spearpoint, a Research Leader at Olsson Fire & Risk. The research project developed a database of high-rise fires and examined how it could be applied to the emerging field of machine-learning, which may lead to new and innovative fire solutions that could not be readily discovered by manual methods. In addition to the primary output, a condensed version of this research will be made available in a 2019 issue of the CTBUH Journal.

2017 Funding Sponsor

The research project began within two months of the award being given, and was completed in nine months, at which point the report was delivered to CTBUH for dissemination. The winning proposal was chosen by CTBUH’s Expert Peer Review Committee out of 35 total submissions.
