CHICAGO - The CTBUH research team traveled to Belvidere, IL to visit the Gerdau Ameristeel Facility and meet with Duane Butler, manager of sales. Butler heads the Gerdau Long Steel North America Division. The purpose of the meeting was to gain more information regarding the steel to be analyzed in the Life Cycle Assessment of Tall Building Structural Systems research project funded by ArcelorMittal. Specific information, such as steel production and transportation of rebar, will be used for selected case studies that are to be included in a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).
The CTBUH research team had been in contact with Gerdau regarding required information for the project. The meeting kicked off with discussions on the subject of transportation of steel from the mill to the construction site. This information helped twofold, as it assisted in cost estimates along with informing the researchers on the products that are available and feasible to ship via truck.

Butler then explained the production cost for reinforcing steel, which will be beneficial to the accuracy of the Cost Estimate and the LCA study. The CTBUH research team explained what was known about the production process regarding the first case study, and Butler confirmed the prices of rebar in the specific study, for which Gerdau provided reinforced steel and welded wire fabric.

Overall, the meeting resulted in great strides toward accomplishing a holistic LCA of tall buildings.
