University of Melbourne Student Wins Inaugural Master’s Thesis Challenge

DUBAI — The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat is pleased to announce the Farmscraper, proposed by Winki Ip, a Master’s Degree student at the University of Melbourne, Australia, has won the CTBUH “Master’s Thesis Challenge” initiative. Ip was supported in her design project by Fiona McLean (UoM) and Scott Drake (Chulalongkorn University), and received the $4,000 prize during the CTBUH 2018 Middle East Conference from Andreas Schierenbeck, CEO, thyssenkrupp.

The inaugural Master’s Thesis Challenge was organized around the theme “Designing for Innovation: The Ropeless Non-Vertical Elevator,” in parallel with the just-concluded CTBUH Research Division “Study on the Design Possibilities Enabled by Rope-Less, Non-Vertical Elevators” which will be officially presented at the CTBUH 2019 Tall + Urban Innovation Conference in Shenzhen, China.

The Farmscraper is an urban and social vision in response to the increasing concerns for global climate problems, offering a sustainable way for living in the city of Melbourne. The multipurpose building combines rural and urban environments in both design and function. As part of a holistic approach to urban living, it aims to reduce the carbon footprint and environmental impact of the food transportation process, particularly in an age where more than half the population of the world will be living in cities. It also serves as new social and cultural infrastructure for food production, markets, farmland museums, and related educational activities.

To create a fully functional lift system within the complexities of the Farmscraper, each function of the building has its own designated looped lift system, allowing greater passenger capacities to move within the building. The system allows cabins to move horizontally as well as vertically. This enables the cabin to travel up one shaft and down another. This helps to reduce waiting times and increase capacity without installing more lift shafts, which in turn, increases the valuable floor space that could be used for the farmland, offices and exhibition areas in the Farmscraper.
