The projects shown here are the latest in an international series of design studios under the title of the Vertical Architecture STudio ©, or VAST. Created in 2006 with the explicit aim of exploring new forms of high-rise architecture and urban design, all projects to date have been located on large inner city or “brownfield” sites close to mass transportation hubs, most of which have already been designated for high-density, mixed-use development.
The chosen location for the recent VAST program at UNSW – the fourth in the series - is the former Carlton United Breweries site in Chippendale, Sydney, presently being developed by Frasers Property to a concept plan commissioned from Foster + Partners. Renamed Central Park after one of the plan’s main features, the 5.8 hectare site is located on Broadway opposite the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and close to Central Station and the main commercial, entertainment and business centres in the city.
