Illinois Institute of Technology
Chicago, USA
The Illinois Institute of Technology is a national, technological, Ph.D.-granting research university, with world-renowned programs in engineering, architecture, the sciences, humanities, psychology, business, law, and design. Founded in 1940 and tracing its roots back to the 1890s with the founding of The Armour Institute of Technology and Lewis Institute, IIT brings a focused, interdisciplinary approach to education, including the Interprofessional Projects Program. With five campuses throughout the Chicago area and alumni around the world, IIT pairs the educational and cultural experiences of America's Second City with the small feel of an undergraduate population of just over 2300 and total population of just over 7400.

The College of Architecture has several distinct architecture programs with a strong foundation in the Bauhaus thanks to Mies van der Rohe, who reshaped the program as the Director of Architecture upon his arrival in Chicago in 1938. IIT has since then convened a number of tall building studios led by a wide variety of faculty. See below for a list of IIT faculty members leading tall building studios and a list of past studios with links to student work.

Design Research Studio
Chicago Architecture Center - A Third Place
2014, Illinois Institute of Technology, Professor Thomas Hoepf

The project presents a number of design challenges concerning mixed‐use program, constricted site, density, and sustainability, as well as the problem of creating an identity for a new institution within the context of Chicago’s iconic skyline.

Design Research Studio
Sustainable Vertical Urbanism
2013, Professors Antony Wood, Payam Bahrami & Dario Trabucco

The participants in “Sustainable Vertical Urbanism” received a challenge to respond to an apparently simple question: “What contributes to the sustainability of cities?”

Design Research Studio
Hi-Rise, Lo-Carb: Chicago
2012, Professor Antony Wood

“Hi-Rise, Lo-Carb” presents a vision of a more sustainable Chicago. Illinois Institute of Technology architecture students reimagined six downtown sites, designing skyscrapers that address key issues for building a more livable city – a city that is not yet visible but hatching in the minds of architects and students.

Design Research Studio
Tall & Green: Seoul
2011, Professor Antony Wood

This studio looks to find alternative design approaches for tall buildings and create high-rise buildings that are inspired by the cultural, physical and environmental aspects of place.

Design Research Studio
Tall & Green: The Remaking of Mumbai II
2010, Professor Antony Wood

This studio focuses on key issues found in the heart of the city of Mumbai.  Six pairs of students developed real-world projects in a historical neighborhood known as the ‘C-ward’ in the southern portion of the city.

Design Research Studio
Tall & Green: The Remaking of Mumbai
2009, Professor Antony Wood

This studio focuses on key issues found in the heart of the city of Mumbai.  Six pairs of students developed a series of inter-connected towers in a historical neighborhood known as the ‘C-ward.'

Tall Structures and Energy Systems
Professor Peter Land

Professor Peter Land, RIBA, leads two research based project development groups on tall and wide span structures. Both emphasize innovative structures and natural energy systems in response to the future needs of the built environment.

IIT PhD Architecture Projects
Professor Mahjoub Elnimeiri

These projects include presentations of innovative design processes, computational fluid dynamics analysis for wind speed measurements in tall buildings using state-of-the-art digital tools, and the application of BIM concepts to integrate the whole design process of tall buildings.

High Rise Chicago: 40 Story Challenge
2002-2006, Professor Chris Karidis

Professor Karidis’ studio focuses on high-rise building design, and in contrast to remarkably tall buildings, the students are limited to a maximum building height of forty floors.
