Professor Sang Dae Kim, Chair of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, has several objectives to achieve for the Council as stated in his Chairman’s Two-Year Plan, including: 1) promotion of individual and corporate membership, 2) revitalization of Working Group activities, and 3) increasing participation of Country Representatives.
This year Prof. Kim has planned three regional meetings with CTBUH Country Representatives. He has already completed the first meeting in the East Asian region, and the second and the third are planned for the South East Asia (Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand) and Middle East (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, and Iran) regions, respectively.
East Asian Regional Meeting
At the meeting for the East Asian region in Jeju, Korea from 22-23 January 2010, Prof. Kim met with three CTBUH Country Representatives: Masayoshi Nakai (Japan), Guo-Qiang Li (China), and JuHwan Cho (Korea). The following report is a brief summary of the discussion topics and representatives comments from that meeting.
(1) To invite more experts (architects, engineers, professors & researchers) to the Council
Masayoshi Nakai (Japan) CTBUH is not yet well-known to many architects, engineers and professors in Japan. Only those who are deeply involved with tall building architecture know about the organization. But this should be gradually improved, as we plan to engage a Secretariat from JSSC (Japanese Society of Steel Construction) for constructive promotion.
Guo-Qiang Li (China) We will need more promotion as well, since not many experts know about us. Many promotions and activities under the name of CTBUH can be very helpful.
JuHwan Cho (Korea) We have KIA (Korea Institute of Architects) in Korea, similar to AIA in the US. We will promote the Council through this organization for more architects to be involved with us.
(2) To have a sisterly relationship between the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) and the CTBUH
Nakai I have discussed this with Prof. Wada at Tokyo Institute of Technology (TIT) and Emeritus Prof. Takanashi at University of Tokyo. AIJ seems difficult at this point, but JSSC is favorable. I will push it forward for JSSC to be one of our Participant Members.
Also, to have a sisterly relationship between the Architectural Society of China (ASC) and the CTBUH
Li I will discuss this with both Architectural Society of China (ASC) and Chinese Society of Civil Engineers.
Cho AIK is already a Participant Member. I will try to encourage KIA to be more involved with the Council and promote the Council to Korean Society of Structural Engineers, as well.
(3) The possibility of three East Asian countries' annual meeting for Tall Buildings, hosting the Regional Conference every three years in turn, (e.g. Seoul 2010, Shanghai 2011, and Tokyo 2012)
Cho Reports on specific buildings (e.g. Lotte Super Tower 123) from the architect, engineer, and developer could be an interesting way of presentation within the meeting.
Nakai, Li There are already many seminars and symposiums being held in similar forms across our countries. We are not sure about how much positive response we will be able to gather.
Kim I am thinking about regional strategies for more activity of the Council. Let’s start with our three countries first. I am planning to discuss this with Southeast Asian Country Representatives in May. I will also present at the future Middle East Regional Meeting.
(4) To invite more corporations (architectural firms & construction companies) to the Council
Nakai, Li If the CTBUH Headquarters could send us promotional materials, we will start promotion to architectural offices and Construction companies.
Cho Many companies are already members of the Council. But I will encourage more corporations for better outcome.
(5) Educational Program for Advanced Studies (Master's & PhD’s degree)
Nakai, Li We would welcome a program that focuses on tall buildings with CTBUH as the main organizer. We will examine this with TIT in Japan and Tongji University in China.
Kim There are many professionals who want to learn about tall buildings, since there are many super tall structures planned to be built for the future. And they also want to acquire advanced degrees specializing in tall buildings. Thus, many people will be interested in participating in this program once it is organized and begun.
(6) Participation in Working Groups
Nakai, Li, Cho There are many experts in various fields in China, Japan, and Korea. We can encourage them to contribute to CTBUH’s Working Groups.
Kim As this comes together, it will both help the Council’s promotion and the Working Groups will benefit from the experts’ knowledge. We will report this to the Board of Trustees Meeting, and I would like to ask Country Representatives to recommend good experts to Working Groups.
(7) CTBUH 2011 World Conference: Shanghai?
Li I will give this a positive consideration, but I still need to know more about how the conference is going to be operated. What is the role and responsibility of China? How does the program get organized and what about budget, expense, and settlement of cost? I will also discuss with the Architectural Society of China.
(8) Recommendation for Advisors
Nakai, Li, Cho There are many retired professionals in China, Japan, and Korea who have great influence around the industry. If they could get involved as trustees or advisors, the status of the CTBUH would soar and more people would be involved with the Council in the future.
(9) Local Chapters of CTBUH; (e.g., Korean CTBUH, Australian CTBUH, Dutch CTBUH)
Li It is difficult to make a new organization in China.
Nakai As mentioned previously, we will have a Secretariat from JSSC, and I will try to engage ETB (Excellent Tall Buildings) Research Group with the Council.
Many thanks to CTBUH Country Representatives Masayoshi Nakai (Japan), Guo-Qiang Li (China), and JuHwan Cho (Korea) for their time, ideas and contribution to increasing the international exchange of building and urban design professionals in the East Asian region and around the world.
Chairman Kim will continue his meetings with CTBUH Country Representatives in May as he meets with the CTBUH Southeast Asian Country Representatives.
