The Avesta Company has announced that the first phase of the 3,000-hectare Khazar Islands project will be completed by May 28, the Azertag state news agency reports. The first phase consists of several beaches, restaurants, bridges and about 4 km of roads, as well as two 5-ha parks. Read more.

Emirates Group officially opened its second hotel tower, the JW Marriott Marquis in Dubai, which was named Tallest Tower Completed in 2013 by CTBUH. The 355-meter tower is identical in height to its neighbor, Tower 1, which was finished in 2012. Read more.

The 183-meter Vattanac Capital Tower in Phnom Penh, designed by Farrells and described as “an iconic dragon-backed glass skyscraper,” is open for business with just a few tenants to test the facilities, with more to arrive in coming months. Read more.

Abeno Harukas, which at 300 meters qualifies as supertall, opens in Japan this week, and will surpass the 296-meter Landmark Tower in Yokohama in height to achieve “Tallest Skyscraper in Japan” status. Read more.

The Marriott Hotel chain has opened what it is calling the “tallest all-hotel building” in North America, at 1717 Broadway in New York. At 754 feet (22.9 7 meters) the Courtyard-Residence Inn Central Park is 23 feet (7 meters) taller than the Detroit Marriott. Read more.

Construction of Hong Kong Polytechnic University's Jockey Club Innovation Tower, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA), has completed. The 15-story building is ZHA's first in the city, and includes the School of Design, a lecture hall, a design museum, exhibition galleries and a communal viewing lounge. Read more.

Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) has completed its colossal "vertical city" in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. OMA designed the 44-story De Rotterdam complex for its home city, where the building sits on the south bank of the Maas River. Read more.

Wiel Arets Architects recently completed the E' Tower in Eindhoven in the Netherlands. The design of the 22-story, 110-apartment building is derived from the Brick Expressionist style that was common during the city's industrial period and throughout Northern Europe in the early 20th century. UNStudio recently completed the Ardmore Residence, a 36-story residential tower near the Orchard Road luxury shopping district in Singapore. Inspired by the lush gardens of the city, the Residence is organized around specific views and repeats a landscape theme through the entire tower. Read more.

Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Lakes Towers has opened its doors, marking the Swiss operator's sixth Dubai hotel. The mixed-use property will contain 475 units, including 168 hotel condominium rooms, 287 residences and 20 furnished residences. Read more.

Rosewood Abu Dhabi became the first ultra-luxury hotel to open in Al Maryah Island, the new Central Business District (CBD) of Abu Dhabi. The hotel, designed by Handel Architects, will feature 189 rooms and suites, 58 serviced residences and 73 residences for long-term lease. Read more.

London firm Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners has completed a 34-story office tower in Sydney with criss-crossing red braces on its sides and an elevated terrace cutting through its middle. The practice collaborated with Sydney firm Lippman Partnership to design the tower for Australian real-estate company Mirvac. Read more.

The Kintetsu Corp. has set March 7, 2014, as the opening date for its Abeno Harukas skyscraper, which is set to be Japan's tallest building upon completion. Located in Osaka, the 300-meter (984-foot) building topped out in August 2012 and will replace the Yokohama Landmark Tower as the nation's tallest building. Read more.

Somdoon Architects have completed the IDEO Morph 38 tower, a new green-walled high-rise that offers an escape from the congested streets of Bangkok. Located in the residential area of Sukhumvit, the development consists of two separated towers, each targeting a particular type of tenant. Read more.

OMA has completed the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in the heart of the city's Central Business District. As one of OMA's best-known designs, the 250-meter (820-foot) skyscraper, nicknamed "the Miniskirt," features a three-story podium that has been elevated 36 meters (118 feet) above the ground. Reunion Tower, located in the southwest corner of downtown Dallas for 35 years, is prepared to reopen its observation deck for the first time in six years. Construction company Hammer & Hand, which builds commercial and residential projects in the Pacific Northwest, will move to Seattle's first Passive House building. The 100-foot (30.5-meter) Bullitt Center debuted in spring of 2013 and is built to the principles of the Living Building Challenge. Read more.

Singapore-based Pomeroy Studio has completed Gramercy Skypark, billed as the highest sky garden and the tallest green wall in the Philippines. The Skypark is located within the Roger Villarosa-designed Gramercy Residences, which at 250 meters (820 feet) has become the second-tallest building in the Philippines. Read more.

The second St. Regis Luxury Hotel in the Nation's Towers in Abu Dhabi is now ready to welcome guests, after an eight-month delay of initial inauguration plans. The hotel features what developers are calling "the world's highest suspended suite," including a sky bridge that connects the two towers. Read more.

Indian architecture firm Planet 3 Studios has released images of its Heliopolis Tower, a "neo-Gaudi" apartment block designed for Mumbai. The firm was inspired by the organic forms of Antoni Gaudi's balconies as well as Ancient Egyptian columns and modern building materials. Read more.

The Dean of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Wiel Arets, has completed his latest tower project in The Hague. The Anne van Bueren (AvB) Tower will become the newest home of the University of Leiden, providing its student residents with accommodations. Read more.

The unusual 321-room Sheraton Huzhou Hot Spring Resort, located on the Taihu Lake between Nanjing and Shanghai, is set to open its doors. The oval-shaped, 27-story building was designed by MAD Architects and is being touted as one of Sheraton's most elaborate hotels. Read more.

A new luxury residential tower at 2116 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia officially opened over the weekend, after 16 months of construction. The first 14 stories of the building are completely finished, and residents have begun moving in. The remaining floors are set to be completed by the end of the summer. Read more.

Saudi Arabian developer Cayan Investment & Development will celebrate the inauguration of Dubai's Infinity Tower next Monday, June 10. The 75-story building spirals 90 degrees from base to tip and was designed and built by Skidmore Owings & Merrill and contractor Arabtec. Read more.
