Demolition work began today on the 1952 Wilshire Grand hotel in Los Angeles, clearing the site for a new hotel tower. The rebuilt $1 billion Wilshire Grand will still be three stories shorter than LA's tallest tower, US Bank Tower.

Korean Air is redeveloping the site and building the 70-story, 900-room hotel, according to Curbed LA. The building will also contain 400,000-square-feet of office space.
The existing building will be gone in about a year. The Wilshire Grand is scheduled to open in 2017.
