Forbes editor Russell Flannery describes DRbar, an alley pub in Shanghai, as a meeting point for some of the world's leading designers of tall buildings. The joint is owned by an American, former fighter pilot and architect Ben Wood.

Shanghai is the site of the CTBUH 9th World Congress, 19-21, September.

Mr. Wood designed his place to emulate the American Bar in Vienna by Adolf Loos. DRbar is made of elements exclusively from China, including ink stone furniture, shoe leather ceilings and Tibetan silver countertops. He discovered and collected the materials during his explorations of the country.

"I’m trying to tell people something, with the bar, my work and everything I do," Mr. Wood told Forbes.
