Critics angrily denounced an image Saturday in the satirical newspaper The Onion, which showed an airliner crashing into the Willis Tower. The plane was illustrated with the logo “Sears.”
"Sears extremists fly a plane into Willis Tower," says the narrator of The Onion video.
Sears once owned the tower and may locals still refer to it as the Sears Tower.
"9-11 must never be the fodder for jokes. Perhaps you didn't see the news that humor died after 9-11," Onion spokesman Grant Jones said in a statement to reporters.
But many New Yorkers condemned the image as inappropriate and tasteless.
