Karratha, a regional town in western Australia, has officially opened its first high rise building. The development, Pelago West, is a nine-story apartment building and is part of the Australian government's AU$1 billion (US$980 million) initiative to develop its rural towns into "modern, vibrant cities and regional centers."
The Pelago West development contains 114 apartments, a pool, entertainment area and commercial space. The building is the first element of the AU$65 million (US$64 million) Karratha redevelopment.
The development dwarfs the church which was previously the town's tallest building.
All units at Pelago West have sold to local residents and major corporations, according to Western Australia Business News.
Stage Two, known as Pelago East, is currently under construction and is expected to be completed by 2014.
