WASHINGTON, DC – Ron Klemencic, former CTBUH Chairman and Chairman and CEO of Magnusson Klemencic Associates (MKA) received an honorary membership in the American Institute of Architects (AIA).
Thanks to the quality of his structural engineering work, in particular his work on tall-building design, many world-renowned architects have had the freedom to realize the full potential of their designs. Klemencic’s work has helped redefine skylines, revitalize urban centers, and establish international standards for structural design. The Aqua Tower in Chicago, by Studio Gang Architects, Seattle’s Olympic Sculpture Park, by Weiss/Manfredi, and the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre in Dallas, designed by REX Architecture and OMA, are just a few projects that represent the range and quality of his architectural collaborations.
Just two months before the terrorist attacks of September 11, Klemencic was appointed Chairman of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), a position he held for five years. In the months following the attacks, he was the industry’s voice on the design and safety of high-rise buildings. His perspective has been disseminated through public statements and appearances, as well as through numerous publications that include a set of guidelines and safety enhancements to make tall buildings more robust and defensible.
In addition to being a regular contributor to national code-development efforts, Klemencic has been a key force behind MKA’s creation of new standards and systems for tracking and reducing embodied carbon and optimizing water usage.
Recently he was part of Pickard Chilton’s winning team responding to a challenge by NAIOP, the Commercial Real Estate Development Association. The goal of the project was to create a highly sustainable, yet economically feasible, prototype development for the Office Building of the Future. Klemencic’s understanding of emerging structural and construction technologies and materials allowed the team to reach a solution that easily and sustainably adapts a building’s use over time, increasing its longevity.
