First regional meeting of the CTBUH Qatar Chapter

On May 31, 2010, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat organized the first regional meeting of the CTBUH Qatar Chapter. This event was initiated by CTBUH Board of Trustees secretary and Country Representative Bill Maibusch and CTBUH member Kerry Galbraith, and was held at the Tornado Tower, winner of CTBUH Best Tall Building in the Middle East for 2009. The meeting was attended by 60 people.

Mr. Maibusch started the meeting with a presentation of the CTBUH and its mission, history, organization, services and benefits. The main speaker was Stuart Allen, Head of Post Construction Services for CICO Consulting Architects and Engineers. CICO is architect and engineer for Tornado Tower. Mr. Allen made a presentation on the unique design features of Tornado Tower. Pierre Sironval presented on the challenges of constructing the tower. Mr. Sironval is Project Director for Six Construct Qatar and represented the contractor of the Tornado Tower, the Six Construct - Midmac JV joint venture. Mr. Maibusch concluded the evening by thanking both speakers as well as Qipco Holdings, developer of Tornado Tower, who graciously provided the complimentary space for the event.

The meeting ended with a trip to the upper floor of the tower for socializing and networking while enjoying the evening views of Doha's skyline. Following this, a buffet of food and beverages was made available to all those attending, sponsored by Six Construct Qatar.

The first regional meeting of the CTBUH Qatar Chapter was an overall success with many people commenting they enjoyed the program and the opportunity to get together, looking forward to the next opportunity. The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for the end of September.
