Although guests spent the majority of their time in the Jin Mao Tower over the three main conference days, the Technical Tour of Jin Mao offered a deeper look into the building. The tour began with a presentation from SOM’s Walter Wang, who introduced the 420.5-meter-tall building, which was the tallest in China when it opened in 1999. The building functions as a both office and hotel space, with offices occupying floors 3 to 50, and the Grand Hyatt hotel, accommodating the majority of 2014 Conference delegates, occupying floors 53 to 87.

The group was guided via the service elevator to the mechanical unit to view the building’s water pumps, air filter units and electrical closet for floors 35 and up. The second floor, the group was told, has an electrical closet twice the size. Backup electrical systems for life safety, emergency elevator, CCTV camera and diesel generators allow for a 15-day supply of emergency relief for the building, should the need arise.

The next stop was a guest room on floor 68. After exiting the elevators, the famous 33 floor-high atrium at the center of the Jin Mao is visible. This atrium can be viewed from any floor within the hotel, with a full view offered from the hotel’s lobby or “Skywalk” public observatory on the 88th floor.

The hotel room visited was a Grand Deluxe River Room, 45 square meters in size. From the hotel’s room windows (for which there are only two window washers), guests can view the Huangpu River and the Bund, as well as the even-higher Shanghai World Financial Center and Shanghai Tower. Other rooms were visited as well, and the group was informed that each room features its own unique poem.

The final stops on the tour were the refuge rooms, intended for the use of the office tenants in case of fire or other emergencies. The tour ended in the Jin Mao’s 800-space underground parking garage, also for office tenants.
