India, along with China, is widely recognized as one of the largest emerging / developing markets in the world. Indian cities are witnessing massive growth and enormous strain on existing infrastructure. In this presentation we hear from the Metropolitan Commissioner of the MMRDA on plans for Mumbai, including the recent announcement of a 101-storey tower in Wadala district.

This presentation explains a conceptual proposal for Mumbai based on the present problems and proposed government infrastructural projects. The central theme revolves around the basic needs of transport, housing, infrastructure and open spaces. This visualization considers the proposed schemes by various government agencies and incorporates a new dimension of inner city redevelopment on cluster basis to make for a holistic & integrated development of Mumbai.

In the early part of 2009, twelve students from the Illinois Institute of Technology, under the tutelage of Professor Antony Wood and working together with the Remaking of Mumbai Federation and the Mumbai architectural colleges of Rizvi and Sir JJ, undertook a study of the C-ward and designed a connected skyscraper proposal inspired by the culture and climate of the setting. This presentation overviews the fascinating results.
