Details:

The next CTBUH Canada 2018 Tall Building and Urban Site Tour will be Canderel’s new condominium development, YC Condos, a sleek and slender high-rise located on Yonge at College. The tower has five levels of below-grade parking, two levels of retail and three levels of office space. Architectural and interior design was conceived and refined by Grazianni + Corazza Architects and Burdifilek, respectively, and constructed by Reliance. YC Condos has extended balconies and one-of-a-kind amenities, including a top-floor infinity pool.

The structure required innovative thinking by the structural engineers, Read Jones Christoffersen Ltd., to maximize architectural space on the very slender floor plate while maintaining stringent performance requirements to minimize occupant discomfort during frequent winds. The project is the first in the world to employ the distributed viscoelastic coupling damper (VCD) system, designed by Kinetica, which utilizes 3M viscoelastic (VE) damping polymer bonded between alternating steel plates, which replace reinforced concrete coupling beams and are anchored into structural walls. The dampers work like distributed shock absorbers in a car, improving comfort during frequent wind storms, and protecting the structure against extremely rare strong wind events or earthquakes. Because the dampers replace traditional concrete beams, they do not occupy any architectural space, which allows developers to maximize revenue.

CTBUH Canada, the project team and Canderel are pleased to offer participants the opportunity to take small group guided tours, each demonstrating the various aspects of construction underway and completed. This includes an introduction to the project and a description of unique technical challenges and tours of a completed suite, damper installation, building façades and balcony systems, MEP and unique amenities.

Following the tour, participants are invited to a hosted bar and informal discussion with Canderel representatives and members of the project team from Reliance Construction, Grazianni + Corazza, Read Jones Christoffersen Ltd., and Kinetica.

The CTBUH Canada construction tour of YC Condos will be followed by the 2018 CTBUH Canada Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the Upper Deck by Frans, 2-20 College Street, Toronto at 5:15 p.m.
