The 13th Annual Structural Engineering Conference will follow a series of successful conferences attracting nearly 300 participants from the structural engineering community. As for previous years, attendees will constitute a diverse group of engineers from local, state, and federal agencies, consulting and contracting firms and universities. The primary objective of the conference is to educate professionals with regard to new developments in the field of structural engineering, gain timely job-related information, and network with colleagues.
The Conference Steering Committee has met and identified a final program. The morning plenary session will include presentations on the Messina Strait bridge, performance of URM and older RC buildings in the New Zealand earthquake, structural engineering and accounting, and bridge design as a craft. One afternoon session on building design will include presentations on the New York City high-rise construction study, the San Francisco Transbay transit center, wind turbine structures and foundations, and the Al-Hamra tower in Abu Dhabi. A parallel afternoon session on bridges will include presentations on the Sheikh Khalifa Signature segmental bridge in Abu Dhabi, the cable-stayed erection of the Hoover Dam bypass bridge, accelerated bridge construction, and Wacker Drive reconstruction. Two optional post-conference tours of campus buildings-Newmark Structural Engineering Laboratory and the newly constructed Yeh Student Center-will also be offered.
More information on the conference, including a registration form, can be obtained at http://www.conferences.illinois.edu/structural. The conference fee is $160 per person and will be waived for students except for a nominal luncheon cost. Advanced registration must be completed by April 10, 2012. Questions regarding the conference can be directed towards Nancy Simpson (217-244-9687; nsimp1@illinois.edu) or the conference co-chairs, Dan Abrams (217-333-0565; d-abrams@illinois.edu) and Bassem Andrawes (217-244-4178; andrawes@illinois.edu.)
