DUBAI - The Tall Timber Working Group, assembled to create a CTBUH Technical Guide on the use of Timber in High-Rise Buildings, established responsibilities for its members at the CTBUH 2018 Middle East Conference Leaders’ Meeting Breakout Session. Led by Co-Chair Carsten Hein, Director, Arup, the group began by reviewing a matrix of potential case studies for the Guide, breaking out responsibilities for pursuing stakeholders associated with each study. The group also developed criteria for inclusion of the case studies: Projects will need to at least have advanced to the detailed design phase, if not already be built, to be considered. Buildings having elements such as steel connectors, modular façades and composite slabs will be included in the consideration of “timber” structures.

The topics of modular construction, digital fabrication, and sprinklers should also be explored in the guide, the Working Group decided.

The group recognized the challenge of classifying types of timber construction when the current state of the art contains many bespoke solutions, and not much replication from project to project. The Tall Timber Working Group also resolved to advocate for an even greater presence of Tall Timber in the program of the 2019 World Congress in Chicago.
