DUBAI - The CTBUH Performance-Based Seismic Design Working Group reconvened at the CTBUH 2018 Middle East Conference in Dubai to outline an approach for updating their 2017 technical output “Performance-Based Seismic Design for Tall Buildings.” The group, which is chaired by Ron Klemencic, Chairman and CEO, Magnusson Klemencic Associates, was formed to address appropriate conventions for addressing seismic design for tall buildings, particularly given advances in available building performance analytics.

The meeting kicked off with a discussion on feedback received after the first edition of the guide was released, with the group evaluating the scope of the update in relation to each. Among other items, the group discussed the addition of an appendix to clarify design loading code application, as well as how to synthesize a detailed review received from a group In Japan. The group also discussed including recommendations for external bracing and an analysis of large-scale nodal testing of steel and composite systems, and noted that updated design criteria should focus on resiliency to climate factors.

Presentations from Performance-Based Seismic Design Working Group members on the most salient challenges and solutions in seismic design followed. David Shook, Structural Engineer, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, talked about how smaller building cores are likely to require additional reinforcement and bracing. Nick Alexander, Partner, Davy Sukamta & Partners, then shared his presentation “Challenges of Implementing PBSD in Indonesia,” noting hurdles inherent in code conflicts and lack of widespread technical development. The final presentation came from John Viise, Associate Principal, Thornton Tomasetti, who detailed the case study of the Pasifik-Ego Landmark Tower in Ankara, Turkey.

The next steps will include collating comments on current PBSD guidelines and collaborating to provide an updated document in advance of the CTBUH 2019 Tall + Urban Innovation Conference in Shenzhen. The group also discussed the creation of a future document that would be intended for building owners and occupants seeking detailed information on the improvements that would be possible from pursuing Performance-Based Design objectives.
