LONDON – On the morning of September 10, CTBUH UK held a breakfast seminar entitled Rights of Light. This event was run in partnership with the legal firm Fieldfisher, who hosted the event at their London office. As guests arrived they were able to take advantage of the nice weather by having breakfast al fresco on their top floor balcony, which offers panoramic views of London.

Once inside Lesley Webber, Consultant, Fieldfisher, kicked things off by discussing the current challenges facing the law on rights of light. With a number of interesting stories and case studies, she highlighted how traditional rights of light analysis is not enough and that conduct and oppressiveness are key factors affecting whether an injunction is granted. Paul Smith, Director of Building Consultancy, GL Hearn, then took to the floor to discuss the practical implications of rights of light for developers and property owners. He highlighted the rise in rights of light deals being made with those affected and the importance of addressing rights of light early in the development process. After questions from the floor it was time to go to work, with the event finishing perfectly on time.
