DUBAI - As part of the wider annual Leaders Meeting, the CTBUH Vertical Transportation Working Group held a meeting at the CTBUH 2018 Middle East Conference to discuss an update of the Vertical Transportation Technical Guide, which will be the first output of the Working Group. The group, which had its inaugural meeting in 2016, is chaired by Robin Cheeseright, Director, D2E, and was formed to provide tall building industry professionals with a resource for the most recent innovations in the vertical transportation sector.

The meeting began with a review of the content strategy set forth by CTBUH Chief Executive Officer Antony Wood, which included the target audience of the publication, the language of the guide, and its scope. The audience of the Vertical Transportation guide, like the Smart Building Technology Working Group’s Technical Guide, is intended to be expansive and span across many disciplines. Therefore, the Guide’s user-friendliness should be enhanced with a high proportion of visuals and be written in language that is accessible to a range of familiarity with the more technical aspects of vertical transportation. As of March 2018, the Working Group, which includes representatives from prominent elevator consultants and suppliers such as KONE, Schindler, Hitachi, D2E, OTIS, thyssenkrupp, and WSP, provided detailed case material that exemplifies their latest technological advancements, supplemented with illustrative imagery, diagrams and tables.

Once the draft was received, CTBUH then suggested some revisions, including combining several of the chapters to reduce their overall number and consolidate relevant topics when possible. Several additions were suggested by the Vertical Transportation Working Group, including one new chapter, and several topics, from seismic effects to ride quality, to be folded into existing chapters. Peer review expectations, both within contributor teams and from external sources, were reviewed and established, with some individuals offering their availability to review draft material.

An end date for additional material and image submissions was set for March 2018 with a publication date in time for the 2019 World Congress in Chicago next autumn.
