SYDNEY – Hosted at the offices of Beca Group at 44 Market Street, the CTBUH Seismic Working Group Workshop welcomed a handful of industry experts to discuss the latest advances in performance-based seismic design (PBSD).

The information-packed workshop explored real-world examples of PBSD design, reviewed and debated guidelines such as Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Tall Buildings Initiative (PEER TBI) and Los Angeles Tall Buildings Structural Design Council (LATBSDC), and offered attendees a closer look at the new CTBUH Technical Guide entitled Performance-Based Seismic Design for Tall Buildings.

Performance-Based Seismic Design for Tall Buildings

The workshop began with welcoming comments by Seismic Working Group Co-Chair Ron Klemencic, Chairman & CEO, Magnusson Klemencic Associates. He then provided a brief history of the Seismic Working Group, highlighting the Guidelines published in 2008, and the events and workshops leading up to the 2017 Guidelines and Workshop.

Co-Chair John Viise, Vice President, Thornton Tomasetti, followed Klemenic’s presentation with an overview of the 2017 CTBUH Performance-Based Seismic Design Guidelines, explaining that the Guidelines are intended for international audiences, and only provide an overview of the recommended two-step design and verification procedure for PBSD. Specific references to more detailed documents are provided, he said, and can further guide and inform practitioners.

The workshop attendees after a long and fruitful discussion.

Klemencic followed Viise with a run-down of the latest and on-going developments in the PBSD industry, including recent issues with phi-factors for concrete design and the developing appendix to American Concrete Institute (ACI) 318-19, which will correct American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) 7-16. Klemencic then delivered a presentation on the PBSD of San Francisco’s Salesforce Tower.

Nick Alexander, Davy Sukamta & Partners, Jakarta, made a presentation regarding the state of practice in Indonesia for PBSD, focusing on how the practice is still in the early stages of development and adoption, with local authorities still reluctant to accept the practice. Rene Lagos, Rene Lagos Engineers, Santiago, then spoke about the state of the PBSD practice in Chile, touching on improvements being made to allow less-sophisticated practitioners implement designs, which will achieve similar performance levels to more sophisticated methods.

A group discussion then ensued.

The Seismic Working Group will convene next year at the CTBUH 2018 Conference in Dubai.
