NEW YORK CITY – CTBUH New York in association with the Young Professionals Committee (YPC) held their Summer Social event on Thursday August 11, hosted by FXFOWLE Architects. The social event provided an opportunity for our members to visit FXFOWLE's office and meet some of the people behind the development of a building that’s helping to shape New York City. This informal social gathering featured a presentation on 3 Hudson Boulevard, along with drinks and light snacks. Our YPC members gathered to catch up over the summer months, and were keen to learn more about the project and FXFOWLE’s development.

CTBUH YPC attendees catch up from summer vacations and mingle before the event’s presentation.

Introduced by colleague Jim Bushong, Associate, FXFOWLE, a presentation by Sarah Davis, Associate, FXFOWLE, illustrated the placement of the design features on the site. One of which proved to be a quite unique foundation arrangement due to its collaboration with the underground metro systems’ easement agreements.  The mechanical systems for heat and cooling loads included some thoughtful methods for approaching compensation through ice storage water cooling, and features a program with mixed-use facilities that includes rooftop landscaping and hospitality. Hesitant at first to join in was Jason Rea, Project Manager at WSP | Parsons Brinkerhoff, who worked on the engineering side of the building project. With a question more directly for him, he joined Sarah and answered some questions about the structural aspects of the building.

Bookending the presentation, members socialized with some drinks and light snacks.  Group discussions followed with some additional thoughtful comments offered. The event was a success for CTBUH YPC, which aims to connect young professional members with the local design community and bring innovative topics to the front of discussions.
