MELBOURNE – CTBUH Melbourne welcomed over 50 industry professionals to a talk on "Aviation Challenges with Building Tall" on June 1, 2016. The first presentation was delivered by Ian Thompson of Thompson CGS. Thompson has supported many tall building approval processes acting as the expert aviation consultant. He provided the group with an insightful overview of the aviation principles of Melbourne airspace, one of the key limits to building tall in the city. The lecture was well timed, as the aviation procedure has recently changed.

Alexei Simm, Project Director, Probuild Constructions, followed with a look at aviation from a contractor’s point of view. His talk brimmed with humor and personal experiences. It highlighted the need for early contractor input, and for considerations that are often overlooked in the developer’s ambition to build tall. Following the talks by Thompson and Simm, an interesting debate on the current political climate, aviation approvals process, and other challenges continued over drinks with further networking. It is without doubt that aviation is one of the hot topics in Melbourne when building tall.

Special thanks to Ian Thompson and Alexei Simm for delivering an informative and entertaining talk; Woods Bagot for hosting, and Probuild for sponsoring the event.
