DUBAI – On June 9, the CTBUH Dubai led a technical tour of one of Dubai’s Cayan Tower. Designed by SOM, the Cayan Tower is situated at the heart of Dubai Marina to provide great views of the sea, the Dubai Marina, and The Palm. Each floor is rotated by 1.2 degrees to achieve a full 90-degree spiral, creating the shape of a helix.

The tour was led by representatives of Cayan group along with Dean McGrail, Director of Property & Buildings at WSP Group, and Mark Lavery, Associate Director – Tall Buildings at BuroHappold Engineering, CTBUH’s Dubai Representatives. The tour included an explanation of the structural engineering efforts in creating the twisting facade and the design decisions in creating this shape in the urban environment. 19 people joined the tour, including Cayan team that also took all members to visit the very top of the building to gain a panoramic view of the Marina and surrounding area.

Dean said, “The tour was a fantastic event with a lot of insights into the unique structure of Cayan tower – a world record holder and one of the most significant and recognizable towers in the UAE.” Mark agreed that the event had been a success for the Dubai group, and was something to build on for future events with an aim to engage a wider cross-spectrum of professionals in the region.

When asked for “insider knowledge,” Dean said, “The elevators are the second fastest in Dubai. The building is served by six chillers. While the windows appear to bend away from you when you’re looking up, they are in fact all straight; the illusion of bending is created by the use of offset stepped intermediate columns.”

Tour members had the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the structure and how it twists through visits to certain parts of the building. They toured the MEP floors on the 28th and 73rd levels, the leisure facilities, as well as a new marketing area, which is currently under construction and will open to the public towards the end of the year. Of course, no visit to the tower would be complete without a stop at the highest point reached by Alain Robert, known as “The Human Spider,” during his free-hand climb of the building!
