NEW YORK CITY – The inaugural event of the CTBUH Young Professionals Committee (YPC) – New York City Chapter was held at the offices of Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF) on April 15. The event began at 6:30 pm with a spirited networking session where guests had an opportunity to mingle and enjoy refreshments before the presentations began. The event was very well-attended, with more than 120 people. Among the many highlights of the event, CTBUH Chairman David Malott and CTBUH Trustee Dennis Poon presented on the exciting new Ping An Finance Center (PAFC) tower, which they have collaborated on for many years. |

The two co-chairs of the YPC, Ilkay Can-Standard (Architectural Designer, KPF) and Hardik Doshi (Structural Design Engineer, McNamara/Salvia) kicked off the presentation. They welcomed the attendees and gave a brief introduction to the YPC, discussed the overarching goals of the group, and mentioned future events. Next, CTBUH Executive Director Antony Wood spoke about Council membership and the upcoming CTBUH 2015 International Conference to be held in New York City in October. He then introduced the first speaker David Malott, CTBUH Chairman and Principal at KPF. |

David Malott began his presentation discussing the Shanghai World Financial Center, and the International Commerce Centre in Hong Kong. Malott emphasized that tall building projects can be carried out more efficiently with the collaboration of architects and engineers, allowing for a more holistic approach to building design. He went on to explain the process of form optimization for Ping An Finance Center and its aerodynamic efficiency, concluding that bridging the gap between structural and architectural considerations helped optimize the final design and lower the embodied energy of the building.
Malott described the infrastructural context of the Ping An site and its effect on building design and connectivity to other tall towers. When comparing tall buildings in the United States, Europe, and Asia, he suggested that the tall building paradigm is being shifted to America with new supertall towers being built in New York City. |

Finally, Dennis Poon, CTBUH Trustee and Vice Chairman of Thornton Tomasetti, elaborated on the structure of the Ping An Finance Center. Poon described the efficiency of the building’s structural system, and how it integrates with the architectural form. Dennis explained the gravity, wind, and seismic loading criteria of the tower and how to create a simple structural solution to withstand the severe wind conditions in Shenzhen, China. The structure of the megatall tower is a core wall-outrigger-mega-frame with a super diagonal system. The structural system can provide sufficient stiffness to the tower, while allowing for an efficient, open floor plate for office functions. The super diagonals and super columns also integrate with the tower façade nicely. Dennis concluded by outlining the analysis Thornton Tomasetti did for the tower and the current progress of its construction. |
