SHENZHEN – The Program and Construction Management Working Group of the CTBUH held their inaugural meeting at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Shenzhen, one of the venues for this year’s CTBUH International Conference.

One of the objectives of this working group is to publish a Technical Guide on supertall buildings. The Guide will explore the application of innovative Program Management processes, systems, and techniques as well as the unique characteristics, risks, and challenges of designing, constructing, and operating Supertall Buildings. Program Management is an essential ingredient for the success of a supertall towers to inform and execute strategy, manage the risks, and assure the outcomes.

Delegates discuss the structure of the Guide during breakout sessions
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss and agree the structure and format of the Guide and to start identifying key topics for inclusion. Representatives from Arcadis and Turner, the main authors of the Guide, were joined by industry experts from a number of other leading design and construction organisations.

The workshop style meeting was facilitated by Andrew Macpherson, Regional Head of Project & Program Management for Arcadis Asia.
Following a series of lively breakout sessions, the group settled on the following structure for the Guide:

Foreword – A View from the Top – This will include an interview with a recognized industry leader.
Introduction – This will explain the purpose of the guide and position the three main chapters.
Chapter 1 – Why go Supertall? – Setting out the rationale for building supertall towers, which are  recognized as being some of the most complex and expensive structures to build.
Chapter 2 – Unique Asset Class – Looking at what makes a supertall tower so different in terms of design, construction, and operation.
Chapter 3 – Why Program Management? – Explaining the key role that Program Management plays in the successful creation of a supertall tower.
Conclusion – The Future of Supertall – What will supertall towers look like 10 or 20 years from now?  How tall could they be?
Delegates determine the final structure of the Guide and assign authorship responsibilities
Another successful outcome of the meeting was to assign roles responsibilities for authorship of key sections together with a timeline. The target completion for the Guide is Quarter Three of 2017. The attendees also proposed a number of Subject Matter Experts who will be called upon for their opinions, experience, and case studies to help bring the Guide to life.

The Working Group followed up the meeting with subsequent conference calls to progress the drafting of the content. CTBUH is very much looking forward to the publication of what will prove to be a very interesting and informative Guide.
