TORONTO Building up momentum for the CTBUH 2015 International Conference in New York City, the CTBUH Canada Chapter held its most recent event on May 12 at the University of Toronto Faculty Club. The subject was “Sky High and the Logic of Luxury,” a presentation by Carol Willis, Founder and Director of the Skyscraper Museum, on the New York trend of supertall, super-slim luxury residential towers. Carol’s presentation was followed by a panel discussion which sought to explore the relevance of the topic to Toronto’s high rise residential market. Around 100 professionals registered for the event, including prominent local developers, architects, engineers, and contractors. The event was generously sponsored by Entuitive, a well-known Toronto based engineering company.

Richard Witt, CTBUH Canada Chair and Principal of Quadrangle Architects, introduced the event and afterwards a reminder of the upcoming CTBUH 2015 International Conference: “Global Interchanges” and a video teaser was shown to entice the local crowd to attend and make the short flight in October. The Toronto representatives are currently organizing a regional tour to follow the conference, which will feature local tours of recent and under construction tall buildings and a tour of the RWDI wind tunnel in nearby Guelph.  The highlight of the regional tour may be the CN tower's “edgewalk,” located outside the visitor’s deck of the world’s tallest freestanding structure prior to the completion of the Burj Khalifa.

Carol’s presentation outlined the current trend of buildings that are very tall, but defined by their extraordinary slenderness ratios, pushing and in some cases exceeding 1:20. These luxury residential buildings offer mostly single unit per floor accommodation with staggering views across the city and Central Park. Building on her theory of “form follows finance," Carol outlined the economic drivers which make these buildings viable, and illustrated some of the recent and under-construction examples.

Following the presentation, a panel discussion contrasted the current residential high-rise climate in Toronto to New York on how the opportunities are similar and diverge. CTBUH Canada Vice Chair and RWDI Founding Partner, Anton Davies, introduced the panelists: Barry Fenton, President and CEO of Lanterra Developments; Sam Mizrahi, President of Mizrahi Developments; and Alan Vihant, Senior Vice-President of Great Gulf. The three panelists joined Carol Willis for a lively discussion moderated by Elsa Lam, Editor of Canadian Architect Magazine.
