TORONTO Building on the momentum of the Sustainable Vertical Urbanism CTBUH conference in Shanghai, the CTBUH Canada Chapter, held its most recent event on November 5 at the University of Toronto Faculty Club. The subject was “Imports and Acquisitions.” A panel discussion sought to answer the question, "What new technologies and techniques are influencing the way we build tall in Toronto? What are we doing well and what are we missing?" Over 80 people representing prominent local developers, architects, engineers and contractors attended the event which was generously sponsored by WSP, a well-known engineering company recently enlarged locally and internationally with the merger and acquisition of Genivar and Parsons Brinckerhoff.
Following the introduction by Richard Witt, the CTBUH Canada Chair, the three part affair began with an overview of the recent Shanghai Conference and an announcement of Global Interchanges the October 2015 CTBUH conference, to be held in New York City. Because of the close proximity to NYC that Toronto enjoys, the prospect of significant audience attendance was palpable and a Toronto regional tour featuring the work of many attendees is an exciting opportunity.

Then three short presentations outlined some technologies currently beginning to find traction locally. David Ruhl from RWH Engineering outlined the potential for use of shotcrete in foundations and beyond, Constantin Christopoulos from Kinetica/University of Toronto demonstrated the advantages of the Viscoelastic Coupling Damper (VCD) slated for use in an upcoming residential project in the city centre and Tibor Kokai of RJC gave an overview of post-tensioned concrete – a technology very common in other parts of the world but which until recently has rarely been used in Toronto.

Finally a panel discussion concluded the occasion. The panelists were Niall Collins (Senior Vice President of Development, Cadillac Fairview), Peter Kofman (President, Projectcore Inc.), Ben Rogowski (Executive Vice-President, Canderel) and Johann Schumacher (Vice President of Development, Oxford Properties). David Bannister of WSP moderated the panel by probing the experience and current activities of the developer-filled panel. A good balance of pension fund based commercial and private based residential development exposed the changing face of Canada’s tall building industry and illustrated some of the drivers and constraints that permit and restrict the implementation of innovative technologies.

Mark Garland of LCL Builds and CTBUH Canada secretary closed the event by thanking the audience and participants and presenting the panelists and presenters with a token of appreciation. He then announced the next scheduled chapter event, a technical construction tour of one of Toronto’s tallest new twin tower projects and a new bold presence on the skyline, ICE, being developed by Lanterra and Cadillac Fairview.  This event will be held on Wednesday 19 November.
