Peter A. Weismantle, Director of Supertall Building Technology at Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture in Chicago, Illinois, is responsible for overseeing the technical development of the firm’s supertall projects from concept to completion. He works in close collaboration with the project team to develop the technical design of each project. He deals with the complex issues of life safety, construction techniques and strategies, governing code and regulation requirements, and has developed widely recognized expertise in technical aspects of the exterior wall, façade access  and vertical transportation in supertall buildings.

Before joining AS+GG in 2008, Peter was an Associate Partner at the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, where he served as Senior Technical Architect on several supertall towers, including Shanghai’s 88-story Jin Mao Tower and the 162-story Burj Khalifa, currently the world’s tallest building at 828 meters. From 1987 until 1993, Peter was located in the London office of SOM where he helped establish that office and led the technical effort on several large mixed-use developments including the initial phases of the Broadgate Development, the Ludgate Development and the renovation of the Economist Building Group. Upon returning to SOM Chicago, his work included the Xiamen Posts and Telecommunications Tower in Xiamen, China; Broadgate Tower and Phase 2 of Canary Wharf, both in London, as well as the 94-story Trump International Hotel & Tower in Chicago.

His current work at AS+GG includes Wuhan Greenland Center, a 125 story, 600+ meter tall, mixed use building in Wuhan, China and Kingdom Tower, a 167 story, 1000+ meter tall, mixed use building in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia which, when completed, will be the tallest building in the world.

Peter has published widely on supertall building technology, including articles in Wiley InterScience Journal—The Structural Design of Tall and Special Buildings, Structure magazine, and the Eighth World Congress Report and Journal of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. He has been a guest lecturer at the University of Illinois, Northwestern University and the Illinois Institute of Technology. He is currently the Chairman of the CTBUH Height Committee, Chairman of the Chicago Committee on High Rise Buildings, President of the Board of Directors of the Safety Glazing Certification Council and was named a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects.
