Swinal Samant is an Associate Professor at the Department of Architecture and Built Environment at the University of Nottingham.  She obtained her Diploma in Architecture from India in 1992, her Master’s degree from University of Sheffield in 1998 and completed her Ph.D. at the Department of Architecture and Built Environment at the University of Nottingham in 2011. She has extensive practice experience having worked on a wide range of projects in India and UK.

Since taking up her post at Nottingham, Swinal has been involved in the delivery of a number of modules in the Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG) programs through which she fully contributes to the ethos of holistic sustainable design and seamless integration of environmental design strategies in buildings to ensure quality in the built environment and address pressing issues of climate change. She has successfully taught in every year of the BArch, Diploma, BA (Hons), and Masters courses offered by the school.  It includes successful academic leadership and management of the BA (Hons) programme as its Course Director; considerable experience of design, development and delivery of UG and PG design studios including the Zero Carbon Architecture Research Studio – ZCARS, lecture and seminar modules, providing specialist ‘environmental design’ input across the various UG and PG programs,  and supervision of critical inquiries that take the form of PhDs, Diploma Design Thesis, and UG and PG dissertations. 

Swinal’s research on ‘Environmental Sustainability’ in the built environment focuses on ‘Building Sciences’ and ‘Urban Design’. Her research interests include:
- Sustainable Design in the Built Environment: Bioclimatic Architecture and Passive Solar Design, Zero-carbon Housing Design, Tall Buildings
- Environmental Sustainability in the context of Building Science (Day-lighting in Atrium Buildings), and Urban Design (Urban Waterfront Regeneration)
