Neville Mathias is an Associate Director and Senior Structural Engineer with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP’s San Francisco office. He has worked extensively on the structural design of major buildings across California and around the world with SOM for the past 26 years. His projects include mixed-use, commercial, laboratory, medical, historic, transportation, residential/hotel, and educational facilities—many of them skyscrapers. He also specializes in the seismic design of non-prescriptive buildings using performance based, non-linear methodologies. He was a member of the SEAONC’s AB083 task group responsible for developing guidelines for the “Seismic Design and Review of Tall Buildings Using Non-prescriptive Procedures”.

Neville has written many technical papers and has given lectures/seminars on various projects and aspects of structural design. Several of his projects have received awards for excellence in structural engineering.

Neville’s current work includes the 1310-foot-tall Al Hamra Firdous Tower in Kuwait and the 100-story Al Sharq Tower in Dubai. One of his projects, the St. Regis Museum Tower in San Francisco, was, until recently, the tallest reinforced concrete building in California. Neville has also been responsible for the design of several projects outside of California in areas of high seismic risk. These include the 75-story, steel plate shear wall Jinta Tower in Tianjin, China and Beijing Finance Street, a landmark eight-block complex comprised of 18 individual buildings in Beijing, China.

Neville holds a Master of Architecture and a Master of Science in Structural Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.
